Henry Scott was born on 11th October 1879 (PoW records)in Burwell (Newmarket Q4-1878 3B:544), baptised in Burwell on 10th November 1878, son of John and Martha SCOTT (née WEBB).

1881 census...Aged 2, he was at Church Lane, High Town, Burwell with his father John SCOTT [28] farm labourer; his mother Martha [26] born Exning; sister Lucy [6]; brothers George [4] and Tom [5 months]. All except his mother were born in Burwell.

1891 census...Aged 12, he was at High Town, Burwell with his parents; sisters Lucy and Kate [6]; brothers George, Arthur [9], Albert [2] and Herbert [2 months]. All the new siblings were born in Burwell. Brother Tom had died in 1881.

1901 census...Aged 22, single, a bricklayer's labourer, he was boarding at 65 Newmarket Road, Cambridge with William and Emma WARD. His parents were at High Street, Burwell with his brothers Arthur (horseman on heath), Albert, Herbert and Robert [7] born Burwell.

1911 census...Aged 32, a labourer, he was still boarding with William and Emma WARD at 158, Newmarket Road, Cambridge. His parents, together with brothers Herbert and Robert were still at High Street, Burwell.

In 1912, in Cambridge, he married Florence M. PINNEY. Her address from CWGC was 41 York Street, Cambridge.

His younger brother, Herbert, died in France in 1915 and is buried just along the coast from Henry, at Wimereux see here

He enlisted in Cambridge, when resident in Cambridge. CWGC and "Soldiers Died" have him in 1st Battalion , the Medal Roll says 6th. They all say he died on 4th September but the original cards of the CWGC say 27th August and the memorial inside St Mary's Church, Burwell says 28th August. International Red Cross and their records from Germany give 27th August
He was taken prisoner (unwounded) on 11th April 1918 at Ploegsteert on the day that the Germans captured Ploegsteert Wood . His date of birth given as 22nd January 1879, next of kin Mrs Scott, 41 York Street, Cambridge. He died of heart failure at the Kriegslazarett (War Hospital) in Charlesville. This explains why he was originally buried in Charleville-Mezieres.

having been moved from Charleville-Mezieres Communal Cemetery where his death was recorded as 27th August 1918
